May 2012 – We followed this very black Grizzly from pull out to pull out across half of Hayden Valley. He finally swam the Yellowstone River just before the Sulphur Caldron and crossed the street to a small meadow. After eating his fill of dandelions and grass he took a well deserved nap. Beautiful photo!I’ve never participated in Bear Friday but I’m in that pre-YNP trip fervor so I’m putting up my cruddy pic. This was after dark so I had to pump the ISO up to 6,400 (I wasn’t in flash range, and didn’t want to be hehe). This guy was right on the side of the road and we were the third vehicle onsite. It was pretty dark out and at one point my daughter yelled “Oh my gosh, it is on the car!” and everyone looked to see what the bear was doing. It wasn’t on the car, someone had opened their trunk and the shadow of it did look a little like a bear on a car. Everyone laughed when they realized the bear wasn’t on a car. Further down the road a person parked, got out of his car, ran up to within 25 yards of the grizzly, took a picture, and proceeded to RUN AWAY from the bear. I told my kids that if I said “close your eyes” they better listen. I’d have hated for the bear’s instinct to kick in – while my kids were watching.
Again, sorry for the quality but thanks for letting me participate.
