Park Rangers attitudes towards bears in Glacier/Yellowstone
We just returned a couple of weeks ago from our 25th anniversary trip to Glacier (MT), Banff, and Jasper. We had never been to any of these parks and it truly was a trip of a lifetime. We had our first ever meeting of bears on a trail in Glacier, and a subsequent conversation with a park ranger left...

Great idea. Thanks for posting the article. I just gave a donation to help those who might actually win a license. It's easy to do. Other readers are welcome to join me.

Re: Trip May 20-23
Dorothy, The hike up to Trout Lake is short, I'd say less than 1/2 mile, but it is somewhat steep. It was the first hike I took Karen on during her first trip to Yellowstone and she absolutely fell in love with the place. Especially if the wind is calm, the view of the mountains reflecting in the la...

Trip May 20-23
We were able to take a quick trip with our son and his girlfriend. Saw a few bears and the Wapiti female nursing a black pup through a scope at the den. Golden eagle on the nest at Slough. Moose and cinnamon bear at Pebble Creek. But the highlight of the trip was our hike up to Trout and Buck lakes....

Re: Bighorn Pass or Fawn Pass?
I have only gone about three or four miles in on each trail, but they each have similar terrain and views. I think you will be happy with either trail.

Re: Q? About May Visit
We were just there last weekend (April 20, 21) and the snow is melting pretty good in the northern Sections of the park. Lamar Valley still has snow but around Slough Creek and Mammoth it is pretty much gone. We were able to hike the road to Slough Creek Campground without much snow. The road to Tow...

Re: Lamar River or Black Canyon ?
Sorry, I have not done either of the itineraries you are talking about, but just from the locations, it appears that the Black Canyon route would be the safer bet as far as snow cover. Of course, anything can happen in Yellowstone at that time of year. Carry bear spray!

Re: Suggestions on hikes or road trips for Aug. 2018 visit?
Your road trip will have spectacular scenery, but it is quite ambitious for a single day, especially if you leave from West Yellowstone. I'm probably in the minority, but if I had to pick one, I'd take Chief Joseph Hwy over Beartooth. I've driven many times before sunrise without issue. Just be atte...

Re: Alternate routes in
Flagg Ranch Road is very rough. I would not attempt it unless you have a strong 4-wheel drive.
