I see nothing wrong with leaving the monopod if you're bringing a tripod. That seems like overkill.

Could happen that early. On average they are there by the second week to mid-May in their greatest numbers. I've seen late-comers into mid-June.

I don't know they're any more closely related than they would be to other types of waders. Stilts are pretty widespread, and I've photographed different species both in Latin America and Africa, and they're found in the far eastern hemisphere too.
