Norris to Mammoth road?

Post by RikWriter »

I heard someone saying something about not being able to get from West Yellowstone to Mammoth right now. Is the Norris-Mammoth road closed? I thought it just had construction going on.

I drove to Norris on Sunday 4/22, but not farther. The signs indicated there was construction and to expect delays of up to 30 minutes, but did not mention anything about closures. I will be passing that way today, and will try to provide a follow-up later. I didn't go to the park yesterday, considerable snow falling all day 4/23.

The road is definitely open. The cars begin queuing (north end of construction) about 2 miles south of Sheepeater's cliff. There are two sections of non-paved/dirt surface you have to drive on. It was both extremely muddy and dusty when we drove through yesterday. The cars start queuing (south end of the construction) about 1 mile north of Roaring mountain. The delays we encountered weren't too bad yesterday, but there are not that many people in the park right now. I'm sure the delays will increase as the number of visitors increases. Try to avoid the area if possible.
