July 7: Hayden Valley Carcass

Camped at Bridge Bay this weekend with some activity in Hayden Valley. It was a banner day! I was at Grizzly Overlook by 6am, in hopes of finding a wolf...or at least a bear. No luck though. The only reward was some elk that were also around the previous evening. https://photos.smugmug.com/GYE/Summe...

Thanks for the report, glad to hear that the bears are out and visible. I'd love to see those photos when you are able to post them.

Re: Current thinking on Bear Spray?

Like Mike also said, I usually keep a fresh one at the ready and an older one as backup in bear-concentrated areas.

Also I wouldn't discount your trail plans as low-risk. Mt Washburn (fall) is the trail with the most bear sightings for me, and Hellroaring is 2nd (spring).

Re: Tell your coolest Yellowstone experience

Wow those astro photos are amazing. Also enjoy reading about those dramatic wildlife situations. I don't have the long history like most of you have, but my favorite so far has got to be that Otter Creak carcass from May 2016. Leaving Canyon CG pre-sunrise, I found a Wapiti female near the bridge. S...

Hunter survives sow grizzly attack (near Pacific Creak TH)

Carr said Moore had bear spray in his pack and a rifle in his hand, but the attack happened so quickly that neither was used.

Katmai July 3 - 6: Brooks Camp

Living near Yellowstone/GTNP is the most wilderness exposure I've ever had. Four years ago I moved here from the suburbs of Chicago; never seen a bison, bear, wolf, or pretty much anything other than an urban coyote. But this summer is a whole other level, because Alaska is being crossed off the buc...

Re: September 2 - 4: Hayden Valley to Beartooth

Thanks, appreciate the comments! What was really funny was the reaction of the crowd. At one point before before the second bear showed up the first bear got up and streched for just a moment. There was a buzz of excitement then a collective sigh when it layed back down. Then the "ooh's" and "aah's d...
