Re: 2019 Reservations

They have built several new lodges at Canyon and tore down all the old cabins (except the Westerns). The new lodges are huge with lots of expensive rooms. Roosevelt still has the old affordable cabins and because they are affordable they fill up fast. Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw them thi...

Re: So, what's the park like this year?

Ah yes, the bus people. I know the argument is buses keep cars off the road and relieve congestion, but they don't, not those at least. Most of those people wouldn't be there in the park except on the bus as part of a tour. They overwhelm locations when they pull in, they often are very rude ...

July 11-15

Every trip is different, as it should be. Busy, but not as busy this year as our last visit 3 years ago. Thankfully. Mammoth was dry again as it's been in our trips since '04. Really we just spent a few minutes there, it wasn't worth bothering with IMO. Not as many animals out in the Lamar Valley, b...

Re: So, what's the park like this year?

I know geothermal conditions aren't always a reflection of the prior winter, but sounds like it's cause for optimism! And the larger animals, I've seen some bears, but the one wolf I thought I saw apparently was only a coyote. :( So that sounds like a plus. Regardless I'm looking forward to our visi...

So, what's the park like this year?

This will be about trip #6, +/- so while not an expert, I've got the basics down. But it's a little different every time. Sometimes Mammoth is nice and wet and juicy, just stunning, other times it's almost chalky dry. Last trip in '15 the whole park was just crazy busy on our arrival on a Thursday a...

Re: Mt Washburn or Avalanche?

Since I'll be there in mid July it might, though not in a big way. Just what I plan for a day.

Re: Current thinking on Bear Spray?

Hmmm, interesting. Like I said I suspected it might be a gray area sort of thing especially since at least one place that was selling it was in California but wouldn't ship here. I knew Yosemite had banned it, but I wasn't aware of Kings Canyon/Sequoia, where I have seen lots of bears. I believe the...

Mt Washburn or Avalanche?

I'm not a hardcore hiker let alone a backpacker, although I did do rim to river and back in a day at the GC a few years ago. But what is the better hike, mostly visually, between Mt Washburn and Avalanche Peak? They seem similar in terms of length, vertical rise and peak elevation, but which one is ...

Re: Current thinking on Bear Spray?

Just for the record I tried to order some. It seems it's no longer allowed in the great state of California. Or at least nobody seems to be willing to ship it here, including a business located in California. I haven't figured out if it's a hard ban or a gray area nobody wants to test. Grizzlys are ...

Re: Big Black Bear Boar

Really? This PC stuff is getting out of hand,, Why don't you ask him how far he was when taking the video.... The distance police would.... I would say enjoy the video....... Yeah really. I have no desire to see a bear get shot by a gun and that is what I feared by the text. I'm not sure what dista...
