Mallard and De Lacy Lakes - June 30, 2017

Post by Scatman »

I just realized that these forums were back up, so I apologize for the delay in posting this report.

On June 30th, I backpacked into Mallard Lake with my daughter for a three night stay at campsite 0B3 on the east side of the lake. On day two, we hiked off-trail, east to De Lacy Lakes, where we passed by a few unnamed ponds along the way and when we reached the lakes, we had an otter entertain us while we ate our lunch on the lake shore. On day three, we started off on the Mallard Creek Trail, but quickly headed off-trail again to an unnamed pond which is located northeast of Old Faithful. The unnamed pond is located about 2 miles as the crow flies from Old Faithful or 1 mile west of Mallard Lake for those who have a map handy. On our fourth day, we packed up and headed back to the trailhead and then a stop at the Bear Pit before heading home.

Looks like a great adventure, except for the mosquitoes!

Thanks lah. Mallard Lake makes for a short (quick) backpacking trip, which suited us this time, and I think it would make for a splendid day hike also. As for the mosquitoes, while they bite me, I don't have any reaction to the bite itself. They never itch afterwards and you'd be hard pressed to know that I'd been bitten. My daughter on the other hand is the complete opposite. If she is bitten it will welt up a bit and the itchiness drives her up a wall. Needless to say, she always ends up with a couple of bites no matter what precautions we use. They are persistent little critters.

I was going to ask how the mosquitoes were at that time of year. Question answered. ;)
