RIP River Road

The Snake River has taken out part of the embankment alongside the River Road and it looks like it may never be opened to auto traffic due to environmental concerns as reported in the Jackson Hole News and Guide. Two hundred feet of road has eroded or is in danger of collapse.

For me due to physical limitations on walking, the road was a great way to get away from the more crowded areas and in to a road and trail less area to explore usually open to those boating down the Snake, from the Bar B C Ranch on the south,to the north where elk would come down from the slopes of Signal Mountain to feed in the sage flats alongside groups of antelope and the access to the south/west bank of the Snake where Cattleman's Bridge once stood.

The road has always been rough, rocky, and rutted and it has damaged my truck on one occasion but I loved it for it's quiet seclusion

We found it a few years back and so only got to drive it once. We really enjoyed and it would be nice to have it back.

Sorry I am going to bump this to the top,but I would like to ask anyone going to the Tetons to maybe check on the road,is the north or south parts of the road open ? can you get up to the river on the north ? how about the south(Cottonwood Cr.),any access to the Bar B C ?

My recent trip was cut short so I did not get to Jackson this season so I hereby deputize you to investigate this matter :)

I was there on this road about the time you posted this. It is open to Bar B C Ranch on the south and open to the north to where it branches. You can go further north and down to the snake river at the the Y in the road, with the right leg of the Y being closed. It looks like they could really open it much further both ways. Such a bummer. This is a really cool area.

Thanks for the information,I was worried that the NPS would just gate the road at the paved main road and that would be the end of it
