Bear That killed Female Jogger Euthaned after breaking into home

Post by karenandbill »

A grizzly bear was captured and killed after breaking into a home near West Yellowstone and getting some dog food. According to genetic tests, this was the same bear that killed the female jogger earlier in the summer. She had a cub with her and I'm not sure what its fate is. In 2017 She was captured for research purposes and in 2020 injured a hiker near Henrys Lake when he surprised her and her cubs. Although I sometimes question the quick trigger of wildlife officials, this seems to be justified.

Unfortunately, it has been a tough summer for grizzlies in this area as there have been a half dozen or so killed for various reasons, some by hunters for "defensive" purposes.

Very sad. They wouldn't have gone after her if she'd stayed out of trouble, but once they start getting into human food, particularly in houses, it gets very dangerous.

Yeah, there are a lot of people in this area who are very lax about leaving out garbage and other sources of food. There have been a number of bears killed aver the last few years because of this. They talk about passing a trash can ordinance but haven't done it yet.

We walked our neighborhood this evening and saw a big pile of black bear scat. The last couple of years a black bear has come down the mountain for chokecherries that grow in several places. So far he/she just goes after the cherries at night and stays hidden during the day. hopefully it stays that way.
