Canyon Lodge Dining Room

Nestled in the heart of the park near the breathtaking Lower and Upper Falls, the Canyon Lodge Dining Room (part of the larger Canyon Lodge Eatery complex) offers a unique blend of mid-century nostalgia and forward-thinking sustainability.

Unlike the rustic, log-heavy architecture of the Old Faithful Inn, the Canyon Lodge facilities celebrate the Mission 66 era—a 1950s movement designed to modernize the National Parks. Following a massive $70 million renovation completed in 2016, the dining area now serves as a vibrant “food hall” that balances retro charm with high-volume efficiency.

A Dining Concept for Every Adventurer

The dining experience at Canyon Lodge is divided into distinct sections to help travelers refuel quickly or relax after a day of hiking:

  • M66 Bar & Grill: The primary full-service option, featuring a casual “Mission 66” theme. It specializes in house-made soups, entrée salads, and creatively prepared Red Trout, bison, and pork. Note: Dinner reservations are highly recommended here.
  • The Canyon Lodge Eatery: A diverse food hall offering “Slow Food Fast.” You’ll find fresh woks for customizable rice bowls and rotisserie stations for hearty, homestyle meals.
  • Falls Café: Ideal for those on the move, offering grab-and-go sandwiches, flatbreads, and specialty coffees.
  • Canyon Lodge Ice Creamery: A fan favorite featuring “Made in Montana” ice cream from Big Dipper, served in house-made waffle cones.

Architecture: The Resurrection of Mission 66

The dining room is a masterclass in mid-century modern design. During the recent renovation, architects removed decades of cluttered additions to restore the building’s original 27-foot ceilings and airy layout.

  • Retro Vibes: The original question-mark-shaped bar has been restored, and chandeliers have been repainted in their original 1950s bright colors.
  • Sustainable Design: The building is a leader in eco-friendly construction, utilizing LED lighting, low-flow fixtures, and even countertops made from recycled fly ash.

The “Soft Footprint” Philosophy

One of the most impressive aspects of dining at Canyon Lodge is the commitment to sustainable sourcing. The park’s concessionaire, Xanterra, aims to source 70% of its food locally (within 500 miles) or from sustainable producers.

Plan Your Visit

The Canyon Lodge dining facilities typically operate from mid-May through late October. Because it is the largest lodging property in the park, the dining room can get busy during peak summer hours (11:30 AM – 2:30 PM for lunch and 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM for dinner).
