Old Faithful Inn

“A stunning place!”
A stunning place! We had a room with 3 queen beds. Our room was in the middle off the top balcony, so there was some noise from observation balcony below and parking lot and lobby, but it was not bothersome to us. It was nice to be able to sit outside room and read, listen to piano (even some barbershop singing!) in the evening. The room was almost too dark for reading even during the day. We wished we had packed book lights. One of the bathrooms had drainage and flooding problems and was freezing cold, so we started using the one in the other hallway, and it was just fine, cleaner drier and much warmer.
We were here three nights, which was too long for the kids who were more bothered by the trip down the hall to the bathroom than I expected. Still, I think everyone should stay here at least once, and sit on the balcony watching old faithful at night.

” … what better place to be …”
After a long day hiking around the Park, what better place to be than sitting up in the balcony of the Old Faithful Inn just letting your mind wander about the wonders you’ve seen or await you the next day.

“Old Faithful Inn is my favorite”
I have to say Old Faithful Inn is my favorite. I have not stayed everywhere in the park yet but I always want to go back there. It has such a wonderful character. I love the history. I enjoy the lobby too. (Visitor from Colorado)
“By far and away, my favorite location”
By far and away, my favorite location is Old Faithful Inn. There are only a few rooms in ‘Old House’ (the original part of the inn) with bathroom facilities–most have just a sink with shared bathing/toilet areas down the hall. Old House is…rustic…but full of history, and you really get a feel for the first park visitors when you stay there. The ‘newer’ addition, added much later, has great rooms with baths. We love the ‘parkish’ decorations, right down to the bear, moose and elk tiles in the bathroom. The dining room is very comfortable and the food good, although not excellent. (EXCEPT for the breakfast bar every morning…delicious and a good value. Fill up and you don’t need to eat again ’til dinner!) Make reservations for dinner early in the day, or even days (weeks, months) in advance, or the wait may be significant! (This is true of most of the nice dining areas in the Park.) While waiting for them to call you for dinner, sit upstairs in the balcony and listen to the piano music, watch people and have a drink (you will, of course, by then have seen Old Faithful go off 4 times–but if not, step out onto the veranda and watch at posted (approximate) times! What a kick!

“clean and attractive … nice and historic”
We stayed for one night in the East Wing of the Old Faithful Inn. It was the most expensive night of our vacation, but we decided to splurge for our stay in this area of the park. We could see Old Faithful erupt from our 3rd floor room. The Inn was undergoing renovation, which did affect the look of the place both inside and out. Our room was clean and attractive, but didn’t have the log cabin look that the rooms in the older part of the Inn had. Still, we thought it was nice and historic in its own right. Our room had 2 double beds, and 4 adults fit okay. We walked around in the Geyser Basin after dinner ’til it got dark. It was great! Also loved hanging out in the giant common area.

“… a childhood dream of mine … WAY overpriced”
We stayed one night at the Old Faithful Inn, and I would not stay there again. We stayed in a “premium” room, and I feel it was WAY overpriced. Okay, we stayed there because it was a childhood dream of mine, but I would not stay there again. It was quite an experience lugging our luggage to our room!

Old Faithful Lodge Cabins
“rustic … with bath”
Old Faithful Lodge cabin is small and rustic. We had a double+single bed unit with bath. There was very little floor space with this arrangement, but we weren’t in the cabin much. The sink was in the main room with the shower and toilet in a small room. Close the door before using the toilet! You can’t even see the shower with the door open. The heater worked OK – we had cold weather – frost on the car in the am. Our unit was one of four in the building – you could hear the neighbors when water was running in their unit(s), toilets flushing or the doors were slamming. One night there was some partying outside and it was audible. No phone to call the front desk!

Old Faithful Snow Lodge
“Great location … Nice, new rooms”
Great location. Two of us got up at 5 a.m. and walked to Castle Geyser while the rest slept late. Nice, new rooms. Not much room to squeeze extra kids in to sleep on the floor. I would not recommend dinner at Old Faithful Inn. Even with reservations, the service was so slow (1 1/2 hours from ordering to being served) and the kids got too restless. Our breakfast at the Old Faithful General Store was very good.

“lots of ambience …”
Smallest of the 3 rooms we stayed in, but most expensive of the three rooms too. Almost too small for 4 people. Same setup as the other rooms we stayed in – separate shower/commode from sink area, 2 double beds, and a coffeemaker. Nice lobby in the lodge, lots of ambience and a place to relax at night if you so desired. Some families were playing monopoly in the lobby (or other board games), some people were sitting around the fireplace reading books. By comparison, the Old Faithful Inn lobby was a party. This was more subdued and more to our tastes, but again, we weren’t there for the lobby.

“… very nice … a little expensive but worth it …”
found it to be very nice. It is a little expensive but worth it. Nice to gather in the lobby and listen to everyone singing around the piano after we have all spent a long day in the park. The food was very nice here as well but the service wasn’t that great in May. They do get very busy here though.

Canyon Cabins
“nice, new rooms … big lounge” (Western Cabins)
Nice, new rooms. Bigger than Old Faithful Snow Lodge – room for kids on the floor. Service is so slow, so ask for extra towels, blanket, pillows when you check in. It took 2 hours. Again, great location to get up early and enjoy the Canyon area before it gets crowded in the afternoon. Nice big lounge to read and relax in so you’re not stuck in the room if the kids fall asleep early.

“Spacious … coffeemaker in room” (Western Cabins)
Spacious. Largest of the 3 rooms we stayed in. 2 double beds. Walls kind of thin so if you’re unfortunate to be around a party or share a wall with some partiers, then it could get annoying. We were fortunately there when it was quiet. It also got fairly chilly in the room which the heater never really overcame. Separate shower/commode from the sink, so it was possible to do your business while still allowing someone to use the sink. As an added bonus, there was a coffeemaker in the room, which we did not expect. However, you might want additional creamer and/or sweet-n-low as there is only enough for 2 cups of coffee.

“Older rooms … decently priced” (Frontier Cabins)
Older rooms (duplex types) that are old but they are a place to sleep AND SHOWER (not sure they do vacuum) but, a step up from camping out! Heater was very adequate, would burn you out of the one we were in – radiator type … no A/C, but we didn’t need it, a cold front came through. No TV or phone … or coffee maker … but we didn’t need or want any of those things – we were out early and back late to shower and sleep — so they are decently priced and do the job we were looking for!

“We loved the experience …” (Frontier Cabins)
We loved the experience of the buffalo roaming through the area/parking area. We had one sleep outside our window and could hear him snoring all night. They where there to greet us in the am scratching on the sides of the cabins and the little trees outside. LOVED IT!

Mammoth Frontier Cabins
“convenient … meager accommodations”
These old cabins are nestled behind the Mammoth Springs Hotel. They are very old so don’t expect more than a place to sleep and shower. The frontier cabins have 2 double beds, a shower, toilet, and sink. The rooms are quite small, however, the convenience of being in the park was worth the mediocre accommodations and expense. My wife was not pleased with the cleaning staff. It appeared they didn’t vacuum the rooms very well, and we were constantly tracking in stuff from our hikes. Also, the carpeting was old, dirty, and definitely needed to be replaced. There is no air conditioning and the week we were there it was in the high 80’s and low 90’s. Cooling the room was accomplished by opening 4 large screened windows so you could get a nice breeze going through the room. Some of the cabins are duplexes, so you share a wall with neighbors. Fortunately, our neighbors were quiet so whatever soundproofing was present seemed sufficient.
Our cabin was B17, and it faced a nice grassy courtyard enclosed by other cabins. This was very nice for the kids as they enjoyed playing outside after dinner. However, I was surprised that the entire area was infested with ground squirrels, which have absolutely lost all fear of humans. No doubt, most of their diet is now provided by people feeding them. If you have fear of rodents, staying here may be a bit unnerving as the squirrels will readily approach you. My kids dubbed one of the squirrels “Fat Lard” since he was clearly getting more than his fair share of french fries.
The cabins are all within walking distance of the Mammoth Restaurant, grill, and general store which makes up a bit for the meager accommodations. Also, there are a number of other conveniences in Gardiner, Montana, which is only 10 minutes away by car. Of special note is the Laundromat in Gardiner. Its a decent place to do you laundry, and right next store is a little coffee shop.

“Very quiet.”
We had two double beds and a bath. The sink was in a separate room, the toilet and shower were in a second separate room. The heater in the toilet/shower room did not work, but the heater in the main room did just fine (except for the night the power went out!). The unit was much roomier than OFL and it was a freestanding, single unit cabin. Very quiet.

“Cabins were clean”
Cabins were clean. Ok the rest rooms were outside in a different building but look through the eyes of a 6 yr old who didn’t need prodding and was happy and ” we will go to bathroom outside in a different place”. it was really clean room. no problem at all.

“Clean … comfortable beds”
I enjoyed the cabins at Mammoth. They are itty bitty tiny but clean with reasonably new and comfortable beds, and are close to the “action.”
